CA Fitness Courses

Understanding Children & Exercise

Designed by professionals from the fields of paediatrics, physical education and health & fitness, this two day course will give you the knowledge and skills needed to design, implement and promote safe and effective exercise activities for children through all development stages. This course is ideal for those who work within:

  • Health and Fitness
  • Schools and Clubs
  • Sports Development and Community Projects

Award Structure

  1. Day 1 - Attend the 8 hour classroom based module working through a 52 page work book supplied on the day. The day will provide each candidate wqith the knowledge and tools to plan, prepare, promote and deliver structured sessions of activity to young people through each key stage of development.
  2. Day 2 - Select one of the four practical modules:
    Fundamental Fitness Junior Combat Junior Dancer Junior Yoga
    Each module covers the specialsits skills and activities included on the cd-rom provided on the day. Ongoing assessment of each candidate is undertaken throughout the day.
  3. A written assessment must be completed for each practical module. The assessment combines the knowledge and theory from Day 1 with the practical application of skills from the Day 2 module.
  4. Practical Evidence Sheet - Those candidates that do not have a specialist qualification for working with young people must assist in the delivery of three activity sessions to young people. The sessions must be led by a person who is qualified to work with young people.
  5. Certification - To gain certification each candidate must attend the Day 1 Theory module and successfully complete one of the practical modules. Each candidate must then submit their practical evidence sheet and successfully complete their Written Assessment. Certificates are awarded and expire within twelve months of issue. Re-certification is via distance learning at no additional cost.

Course Fees

  • Day 1 Theory module combined with any practical module £109.00
  • Additional practical modules £65.00
  • Stand Alone Practical Modules £79.00 - this option is only available to candidates currently holding a CYQ Level 2 in Children's Fitness

Duration

  • 14 hours - 8 hour theory module & 6 hour practical module
  • 3 hours - Practical Evidence (assist in the delivery of activities to children)
  • 3 hours - Written Assessment (a new written assessment must be completed for each practical module undertaken. Each written assessment is completed by distance learning and must be submitted no more than one month after the completion of the practical module)

The Award Scheme

This award enables the instructor to plan, prepare and deliver a series of non-competitive, progressive classes to children of all ages. The successful completion of the Understanding Children and Exercise (UCE) award will help each candidate work towards the Level 2 Instructing Exercise and Fitness NVQ/SVQ. The UCE award contains information that can be linked to the following Level 2 units:
C35 Deal with accidents and emergencies
D416 Evaluate coaching sessions and develop personal coaching practice
D417 Support participants in developing and maintaining fitness

Successful completion of the Fundamental Fitness award is linked to:
D410 Plan and prepare a gym-based exercise session
D411 Instruct a gym-based exercise session

Successful completion of the Junior Dance award is linked to:
D414 Plan and prepare a group exercise
D415 Instruct a group exercise with music session

Entry Requirements

  • Candidates must be at least 18 years old on the requested course date
  • Candidates must possess a current, recognised fitness qualification or have proven experience of working with young people in an activity environment.

For each Day 2 module all candidates will receive a free cd-rom that will include:
• Teaching Guidelines, Programme design and Health & Safety
• Photo library of exercises and stretches for each age group
• Lesson Plans and Class Format
• Personal and Group Development Logs
• Certificate templates
• T-shirt and merchandise design templates
All children who complete the award will gain their Certificate of Achievement. The sections of each award have been carefully designed to enable all children who partake to develop their own level of balance, co-ordination, speed, strength, agility, flexibility and endurance in a non-competitive environment which will motivate them to continue exercising.
